New Jersey to combat Problem Gambling with new task force

New Jersey has long been a pioneer in the gambling industry, playing a crucial role in the repeal of PASPA (Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act) back in May 2018, which opened the door for legalized sports betting across the United States. According to Felcia Gondon, executive director of the Council on Compulsive Gambling of New Jersey, they have experienced a 277% increase in helpline calls since 2018. A 2023 report from Rutgers University found that 6% of New Jersey residents are at high risk for Problem Gambling, compared to the national average of 1-2%. Among those at risk, young males and Black and Hispanic residents are the most affected populations.
The ease of access to online betting platforms, coupled with aggressive marketing and promotions, has contributed to higher participation rates. Unfortunately, this surge has also led to a rise in Gambling Addiction cases. The New Jersey Task Force on Problem Gambling aims to address this growing concern by examining the current state of Gambling Addiction in the state, identifying gaps in existing resources and developing strategies and tools to support affected individuals and their families.
History of sports betting in New Jersey
New Jersey's journey in the gambling world began long before the recent sports betting boom. Atlantic City, once known as the East Coast's premier gambling destination, has been a significant player in the state's gambling industry since the late 1970s. Amusement gaming at the Jersey Shore and multiple horse racing venues also contribute to the state's gambling landscape. However, it was New Jersey's relentless battle against PASPA that truly transformed the national landscape.
In 2011, New Jersey voters approved a referendum to amend the state constitution, allowing sports betting. This led to a series of legal battles culminating in a landmark Supreme Court decision in May 2018 that struck down PASPA. New Jersey's victory not only legalized sports betting within the state but also paved the way for other states to follow suit.
Popularity of sports betting in NJ
Today, New Jersey is one of the leading states in the sports betting market, consistently ranking among the top in terms of betting handle and revenue. In May 2024, SportsHandle reported that New Jersey became the first state to eclipse $50 billion in total handle, with sportsbooks generating just south of $4 billion in revenue. The state boasts a diverse array of betting options, from 12 traditional brick-and-mortar sportsbooks in Atlantic City casinos to 18 online platforms accessible from anywhere within state lines.
The convenience of online betting has been a significant factor in its popularity. Major events like the Super Bowl and March Madness attract massive betting volumes, but regular season games and lesser-known sports also see substantial action.
