North Carolina is the most recent state to have legalized online sports betting, which went live at 12 PM ET on March 11, 2024. That makes it the 30th state to do so, and with over three months in the books, now is a great time to take a look at some statistics from there thus far.

The Start of Legalized Sports Betting in North Carolina

Legal online sports betting in North Carolina was a long time coming, as the Tar Heel State had legal in-person sports betting as early as 2019. Along with a state filled with several professional teams and some of the most high-profile collegiate programs, it seemed inevitable.

So, when the legislation was signed into law on June 14, 2023, it was known that online sports betting would become legal and launch within 12 months. It was likely a long wait for sports fans in NC, but the launch went smoothly and has been operating on all cylinders for a few months now.

The launch came at an opportune time for fans, as it was right at the start of March Madness. With the sports calendar having slowed down in the summer months as we await the increased volume in the fall, it’s an appropriate time to check in on how things have gone so far.

NC Sports Betting Figures by Month

There are several numbers worth noting when it comes to sports betting figures in North Carolina, but of course, some are more noteworthy than others. Below, we’ve shown the gross revenue for the state followed by the total amount wagered. With May being the most recent full month on the books, that’s where we’ll start:

May 2024: $63,080,347 ($494,602,507)

April 2024: $105,251,672 ($569,283,605)

March 2024: $66,496,213 ($456,702,632)

As you can see, after a huge April, the revenue took a dip this past month. There can be a multitude of reasons for that, but perhaps the most significant is the decrease in volume in the sports schedule, as previously mentioned. Remember, March Madness bleeds into the first two weeks of April, so it certainly makes sense that those were the higher months, along with the NBA and NHL seasons still having been in full swing.
