The fastest-growing sport in the country just got even more interesting. Pickleball has taken the country by storm and has become extremely popular among people of all ages. The sport is a bigger version of ping pong but a smaller version of tennis, but it still makes you work up quite a sweat.

Besides being a fun social game, pickleball is also now available to gamble on in certain states. Professional pickleball leagues made this groundbreaking announcement a few months ago, so let’s dive into the legality of betting on pickleball around the country.

How and where can I bet on Pickleball?

The Professional Pickleball Association made history last year when it announced that it would offer pickleball in the sports betting market. On August 24, 2023, the PPA partnered with FanDuel Sportsbook to expand pickleball into sportsbooks. The PPA became the first pickleball association to accomplish this feat. PPA Tour Founder and CEO Connor Pardoe was ecstatic about the growth of the game, “We are excited to be paving the way in the pickleball sports betting space, and we couldn’t be prouder to lead the sport’s leap into such an innovative industry.” (PPA Tour)

There are limitations to betting on pickleball, such as location and which sportsbooks it is offered on. As of right now, only FanDuel Sportsbook is offering pickleball bets, and it’s only for the PPA. In addition to that, only 10 states that have legalized sports betting are offering pickleball bets at the moment.

Where are you? Location considerations

It’s now 38 states in the country have legalized sports betting in some form. However, only 10 of those states have legalized betting on the PPA through FanDuel Sportsbook. Those states are Colorado, Connecticut, Illinois, Louisiana, Maryland, Michigan, Oregon, Tennessee, Washington, and Wyoming (Sports Handle). Other states are expected to legalize gambling on the PPA through FanDuel Sportsbook in the future.

How old are you? Age considerations

You must follow the rules set by the state in which you are located to legally gamble on the PPA at FanDuel Sportsbook. Nine of the 10 states that offer legalized gambling on the PPA require the person to be at least 21 years old. The outlier is Wyoming, which requires its users to only be 18 years old to bet on sports.

Can professional pickleball players bet on sports?

Yes and no. PPA players are banned from betting on the PPA or any other pickleball-related events. The PPA’s sports gambling rulebook states, “While participating as part of the PPA Tour, Covered Persons may not engage, nor attempt to engage in any legal or illegal Sports Betting Activity related in any way to other Pickleball competitions. This includes the PPA Tour, Major League Pickleball, the Association of Pickleball Professionals, and any other events sanctioned by USA Pickleball.” (PPA Tour, 2)

With that said, PPA players are allowed to bet on other sports, such as MLB, NBA, and NFL. It states in the rulebook that,“Covered Persons may engage in legal Sports Betting Activity related to other sports that have no connection to Pickleball Competitions” (PPA Tour, 2). That means PPA players are free to bet on sports as long as it’s not pickleball and it’s through a legal sportsbook.

History & Growth of Pickleball in the United States

The origin of pickleball started in 1965 with Joel Pritchard, a congressman from Washington State, and Bill Bell, a successful businessman. One summer, the two men came home from golf to find their families sitting around. In an effort to create a game, the two found ping-pong paddles, a plastic ball, and a badminton net (USA Pickleball). That was the first instance of a pickleball game. Seven years later, a corporation was created to protect the creation of the new sport.

The sport saw minimal growth for the next few decades. Pickleball courts were popping up around the country during those decades, and people of all age groups were participating. By 2013, the United States Pickleball Association had over 4,000 members - a new record (USA Pickleball). The next decade would see the most growth in the history of the sport as the USAPA would record 10,000 members by 2015. Just a few years later in 2019, there were over 40,000 members in the USAPA, which marked a 1,000% growth rate in 10 years (USA Pickleball). In that year, the Sports Fitness Industry Association 2019 report showed that pickleball continued to be the fastest-growing sport in the country.

Nearly 60 years after the first pickleball game in Washington, the USAPA announced that memberships exceeded 70,000 (USA Pickleball). By the end of the year, the Sports & Fitness Industry Association (SFIA) awarded pickleball with the title of the fastest-growing sport in the country for the third year in a row. The report indicated that there were over 8.9 million players above the age of 6 (USA Pickleball).
