Learn the warning signs of Gambling Addiction:
Inability to stop or cut back: When someone has attempted to stop or reduce their betting but is unable to do so. They may also experience feelings of restlessness or irritability when trying to cut back.
Increased frequency or amount of bets: Betting more frequently or increasing amounts risked, often to reach the level of excitement previously experienced at lower amounts or fewer bets ("tolerance").
Borrowing money: A person may try to borrow money from others to fund their betting activities.
Neglecting other responsibilities: Negative impacts on important responsibilities such as work, school or family obligations.
Preoccupation: Constantly thinking and/or talking about betting can be a sign that it has crossed a line into an compulsive behavior that needs to be addressed.
Chasing losses: Betting more in hopes of winning back what was lost previously is a worrying indicator commonly seen by Birches Health counselors in individuals struggling with gambling addiction.
Hiding or lying about betting activity: Some may feel the need to lie about or hide it from others, at times due to shame or embarrassment.
Gambling as an escape: Often gambles when feeling distressed (ex: helpless, guilty, anxious, depressed)
