Porn addiction doesn't have an official diagnosis. The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) — which is used by professionals to diagnose mental illnesses, such as bipolar, depression, and attention deficit — doesn't even have it listed. Still, it’s referred to as hypersexual disorder. This excessive habit can impact each aspect of your life, including your career, relationships, and financial situation.

Self-Assessment Test: Am I addicted to porn?

Porn is inevitable. The accessibility of porn is due to the rise in internet and smartphone use. Back in 2022, a study found that the amount of pornography increased to 10,000 terabytes. Pornography has provided a quick and easy way to relieve sexual pleasure. However, it can quickly become a problem if you depend on it to escape feelings or situations.

There might be a time when you’re asking yourself, “Am I addicted to porn?” Porn is similar to other behavioral addictions where you're addicted to the behavior. The most common signs of porn addiction include:

  • Inability to stop or control the addictive behavior despite the negative consequences

  • Unable to avoid pornography

  • Craving for masturbation or adult entertainment

  • Relationship and intimacy issues caused by excessive porn use

It can be hard for someone to seek treatment for their porn addiction due to shame and guilt. It can become a problem if it’s left untreated. Have you ever wondered if you have a pornography addiction? Do you find that your life revolves around it? A self-assessment test can help you learn about your porn habits and determine whether it’s an addiction.

Most of the questions are based on behaviors and actions that took place in the last six months. Be honest with answering these questions. Take your time with this self-assessment as it's not timed. This leads to the best and most accurate results.

You’ll answer various questions, which are based on your experience. Only use these questions to identify any issues you might have with sex or porn addiction. You’ll mostly answer these questions with a “yes” or “no.”

Biological Sex Addict Test

According to a recent study, scientists found that genes and other environmental factors can increase one’s risk of addiction. Also, teenagers and adults with other mental disorders are at greater risk of behavioral and substance addiction.

Sex addiction is caused by a biological response to external cues. For example, high levels of dopamine and serotonin might increase sexual cravings and engagement with such behaviors. Sex is a biological and instinctual drive, which makes it natural.

However, it becomes a problem when those feelings and cravings are hard to manage. In this case, they will take a biological sex addict test to determine if their behavior is addictive.

Psychological Sex Addict Test a.k.a. Sexual Addiction Screening Test

The Psychological Sex Addict Test, also known as the Sexual Addiction Screening Test (SAST), is based on a list of the common thoughts, behaviors, and actions that are related to the psychological definition of “hypersexuality.” This test helps you gauge your compulsive or addictive behavior. It's typically taken in medical settings, such as clinics, hospitals, in-patient and out-patient treatment programs, and private practices.

The SAST provides an exhaustive list of responses that determine between non-addictive and addictive behavior. You will respond to each response with a “yes” or “no.”

Trauma-Based Sex Addict Evaluation

Trauma-based sex addicts often experience trauma as a child or adolescent. In fact, the vast majority of sex addicts suffered emotional abuse or trauma during childhood or adolescence. It often stems from sexual trauma or abandonment trauma, such as divorce or an absent parental figure.

The individual often repeats this trauma into adulthood. The compulsive behavior can manifest into an addiction. In a trauma-based sex addict evaluation, it can be determined if the addiction stems from trauma. It can also identify the trauma that caused the addictive behavior.

You might notice that your feelings or emotions involving the trauma are repressed, which is normal and nothing to be ashamed of. In this case, you may work with a mental health counselor to determine the next course of action. This can be a first step in the healing and recovery process.
