Do you or someone you know struggle with sex addiction? Sexual addiction is sometimes known as hypersexual disorder or compulsive sexual disorder. This disorder involves engaging in risky sexual activities, being preoccupied with sexual thoughts or fantasies, or looking at pornography.

A sex addiction test can help you determine if you or someone you love struggles with this disorder, which can disrupt one's daily life, relationships, and finances.

Start your recovery journey by taking Birches Health’s Sex Addiction Test

What is a sex addiction test?

A sex addiction test examines your experience with this condition. It determines your sexual compulsions over the past several months. You can use the quiz to determine whether you or someone you love suffers from sex addiction.

The questions are for individuals who struggle with compulsive sexual behavior. This quiz is an assessment tool that helps you identify the issues you or someone you know might have with sex. It won't offer an official diagnosis. Only a healthcare provider or licensed professional can diagnose sex addiction.

What questions will I be asked in a sex addiction test?

This quiz will ask questions about your compulsive sexual behavior, habits, thoughts, and preoccupations. It will determine whether your sexual compulsion has negatively influenced your life. Most of the questions relate to the signs and symptoms of sexual addiction. Note: This test is confidential and won’t ask for personal information.

Next steps: What to expect after taking a sex addiction test

An assessment is the first step toward recovery. Most individuals stop short of getting the help they need. They might experience fear, shame, or guilt from their sexual addiction. However, this quiz can be valuable in working with a mental health professional.

Use the results to determine the severity of your sexual addiction. From there, you'll receive a personalized approach to treating your disorder.

How long does recovery from sex addiction take?

Sex addiction recovery is determined by many factors, such as the severity of the disorder and treatment received. Experts claim recovery can take anywhere from two to five years. This can also vary from individual to individual. This guide gives a rough guideline on the sex addiction recovery timeline, as explained in Mending a Shattered Heart by Stefanie Carnes, PhD.

Development Stage

The development can take place during the first three months. During this stage, the individual will undergo an assessment. A healthcare provider or mental health provider will determine the severity of the disorder and develop an individualized approach to treatment.

The individual will realize there is a problem and is advised to stop their compulsive behavior as soon as possible. Some individuals might look for solutions during this stage, such as therapy.

Crisis Stage

The individual undergoes the shock of realizing their sex addiction as they cultivate self-awareness. This stage can last between three and six months. Therapy typically includes individualized or group counseling. During each session, individuals will uncover the root cause of sex addiction and learn healthy coping strategies. An important thing that comes out of this stage is the individual's desire to make changes in their life.

Recovery Stage

The recovery stage typically lasts six to 12 months. Individuals will adapt their new behaviors, cognitive beliefs, and skills to support their long-term recovery. They will also work on repairing their fractured relationships. Individuals might also struggle with the loss of the addictive behaviors they relied on for years.

Growth Stage

The growth stage includes maintenance and relapse prevention, which is one year and beyond. Most individuals enjoy the freedom of recovering from sex addiction. They will continue to seek support as they embark on a healthier lifestyle. Individuals will also feel more confident about engaging in romantic relationships.

Signs & causes of sex addiction

According to the Cleveland Clinic, there is no overriding sign of sex addiction. Signs may vary from individual to individual. Some of the most common include:

  • Masturbating several times per day.

  • Frequent use of pornographic materials.

  • An increasing obsession with sex.

  • Spend excessive amounts of money on adult websites, phone sex, and sexual encounters.

  • Careless sexual behavior that includes sexual violence or sex in public.

  • Unable to stop sexual behavior despite negative outcomes with relationships, finances, mental health, work, and daily life.

How common is sex addiction in the United States?

Some Americans struggle with some form of sex addiction. According to the Mayo Clinic, between 6% and 8% identify as sex addicts, which is as many as 24 million Americans. Sex addiction rates have increased over the years, especially with the prevalence of hookup apps and adult websites, both of which are accessible on smart gadgets.

A study found that 4.7 million Americans spend 11 hours a week on adult websites. Sex addiction used to be associated with men. However, more women have admitted to struggling with compulsive sexual behavior. Stigma and shame have prevented some from getting the help they need.  Some are outnumbered by men in support groups like Sex Addicts Anonymous.
