What is a medication-assisted treatment?

Medication-assisted treatment (MAT) uses a combination of medication with behavioral therapy and counseling. This is a well-rounded approach to most types of addiction and mental health problems. How does a MAT program work?

Those medications are buprenorphine, methadone, and naltrexone. Buprenorphine and methadone treat cravings and withdrawal symptoms. Naltrexone blocks the effects of the drug felt in the body. Buprenorphine and naltrexone can be administered by a physician or taken at home. 

Methadone must be taken daily. However, some individuals might need to take it twice daily. All three medications can be used alone or with cognitive or behavioral therapy. 

Treatment might take place in inpatient care, intensive outpatient treatment, psychiatric care, or other types of mental health services. It depends on the individual’s needs and recovery goals.  

Medication for Gambling and Porn Addiction Treatment

Medication-assisted treatment isn’t just for opioid use disorder. It can also help treat gambling and porn addiction. Both behavioral conditions involve an excessive use of these activities. The individual is unable to control their urges. In this case, medication would be required to treat the cravings. 

Gambling and porn addiction can lead to long-term fallout with one’s emotional, financial, mental, and social health. These addictions also causes strain on careers and personal relationships. The shame and stigma associated with these addictions make it hard for individuals to get the help they need. 

If left untreated, it can lead to other mental health problems, such as anxiety or depression. Research has shown those addicted to gambling or porn can benefit from antidepressants and mood stabilizers. The two most commonly prescribed medications are Naltrexone and Zoloft. 

Other options include Paxil and Nalmefene. Medication is used in conjunction with therapy (CBT and DBT) and support groups.

Does MAT Work?

This form of treatment can change a person. When they take the prescribed medications regularly, they’re more likely to keep their jobs and avoid financial problems. 

They are also less likely to end up in legal trouble. Others are more likely to avoid risky sexual behaviors, especially those who struggle with sex and porn addiction. 

Common Types of Medication

Now, it’s time to address the most common types of medication that are associated with medication-assisted treatment and opioid use disorder. Here are three of the following:

• Buprenorphine: Buprenorphine reduces the cravings associated with opioids. It does this by not creating a sense of euphoria associated with hard drugs such as heroin or methamphetamine. It reduces or removes the withdrawal symptoms that are associated with opioid addiction. As a result, it lowers the risk of overdose. It’s available via injection or in capsule form under the tongue. 

• Methadone: This long-acting meditation prevents cravings and withdrawals in those with opioid dependence. This medication is used to treat opioid dependence and is taken orally. It also blocks the euphoric feelings associated with opioids. 

• Naltrexone: Unlike the previous two medications, Naltrexone blocks opioids from attaching to the receptors. It prevents the patient from experiencing euphoria. It also doesn’t come with side effects after withdrawal. Patients shouldn’t use Naltrexone if they are currently taking opiates. It’s also not recommended for those with a history of depression or a lower-functioning liver.
