One of the most iconic events of the middle of summer is the MLB All-Star Game, which is right around the corner. The teams have already been selected for the matchup taking place at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas on June 16 at 8pm ET, as have the contestants for the Home Run Derby 24 hours prior. The two events can be seen on FOX and ESPN, respectively.

Whether it’s the 5 of 9 American League starters all from the AL East, the 32 first-time All-Stars or another storyline that is most intriguing to you, it’s an exciting time with the MLB All-Star Game is about to take center stage. With that also comes new types of wagering opportunities, so we’re here to help fans bet smartly and responsibly during MLB’s mid-summer break.

Legal, regulated betting on the 2024 MLB All-Star Game

Where are you located?

From the Red Sox to the Dodgers, the 2024 MLB All-Star Game features selections from coast to coast. However, not all states across the country permit sports betting. There are currently 38 locations in the U.S. that do, with 30 of them having legal online sports betting. Those are listed here:

  • Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Tennessee, Vermont, Virginia, Washington D.C., West Virginia, and Wyoming

The other eight locations are ones in which retail, or in-person, sports betting is legal are:

  • Delaware, Mississippi, Montana, Nebraska, New Mexico, North Dakota, South Dakota, Washington, and Wisconsin

Therefore, there are 12 states that don’t allow any form of sports betting, whether online or in-person, which are as follows:

  • California, Texas, Idaho, Utah, Minnesota, Missouri, Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina, Oklahoma, Alaska and Hawaii

How old are you?

Along with location requirements, there are also age requirements to legally bet on the 2024 MLB All-Star Game. In nearly all the locations above, that age requirement is 21 years old. However, there are five in which it is just 18 years old, which are the ones below:

  • Kentucky, Montana, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Washington, D.C., and Wyoming

While that may be the case legally in those locations, the sportsbooks within them can still maintain the more standard 21+ age requirement. Similarly, although an individual may be from those states and 18 years old or older, they will still have to abide by the age requirements of other locations should they be traveling and looking to bet on the 2024 MLB All-Star Game.

Can I also bet on the 2024 Home Run Derby?

The night prior to the 2024 MLB All-Star Game is the highly anticipated Home Run Derby, which some fans enjoy even more than the game itself. Despite several format changes, it has proven to be one of the most exciting events among All-Star breaks for all sports.

With that in mind, it should come as no surprise that sportsbooks also offer betting markets for the Home Run Derby. Like the All-Star Game, the same restrictions apply, and the available betting markets may vary based on your location and sportsbook used. From an outright winner to head-to-head matchups, bookmakers will provide betting markets for the Home Run Derby.

Beware of betting on All-Star games

Speaking of those betting markets, there will be ones unique to the MLB All-Star festivities, and that is the case across all sports. While the change of pace brings excitement for fans, it is also what makes betting on All-Star games inherently risky.

Unlike standard sporting events, the motivation of players varies greatly. That’s due to All-Star games being meant to showcase the top players having the best seasons thus far, rather than being meaningful for their team’s success in the long run. Whether a conscious decision or not, some players may not put their best foot forward.

Conversely, that can make others seemingly perform even better in comparison. For example, an All-Star pitcher not wanting to take chances in getting injured may lead to a hitter pulling off a performance they may have otherwise been unlikely to do. This can add up to a different result than expected, especially with all of the best players on the field at once.

Along with more unique betting markets, betting on the 2024 MLB All-Star Game should be done with even more caution than should already be displayed when wagering on any sporting event.

Warning signs of problem gambling

All-Star games are often seen as a break for both players and fans to just sit back and enjoy the action, so a strong desire or feeling of need to place a significant amount of action on these types of exhibition events could potentially be a warning sign of a gambling problem.

Of course, that isn’t the only way to begin recognizing problem gambling. The aforementioned strong desire to bet on casual exhibitions can be a sign of preoccupation or feeling the need to have continuous action at all times, no matter the events.

Despite being preoccupied with gambling, individuals may lie or try to hide what they’re doing. It is also a warning sign to keep betting despite the consequences, which can be severe - debts, job loss and ruined relationships, just to name a few.
