In the seven years since the Supreme Court repealed the federal ban on sports betting to essentially make it a state-specific decision, 39 states (and Washington, D.C.) have passed legislation to permit the sports wagering. The majority of locations allow online mobile sports betting, but eight states still have an in-person requirement.

At a time when laws and available betting markets vary widely by state, and numerous gray-area betting options are unfortunately accessible, there is potential for confusion. Therefore, the state-by-state map above and details below aim to help inform potential sports bettors, so those who wish to place a bet on a sporting event can do so legally and responsibly.
