The International Gambling Counselor Certification Board (IGCCB) has endorsed Birches Health as a preferred training partner, establishing Birches as a trusted provider of certified trainings and work with counselors to earn various forms of Gambling Disorder treatment certifications.

Forty years ago, the IGCCB was established to provide certifications that assure qualified and competent professionals work in the field of clinical treatment of individuals diagnosed with – or at risk of – Gambling Disorder. Certification standards established by the IGCCB represent the current best practices in the field of disordered gambling and gaming treatment.

Birches Health is a leading national clinical provider of specialized treatment for gambling disorder, covered by insurance and state funding. Birches Health’s mission is to provide convenient, comprehensive care and resources to individuals facing challenges related to problem gambling and other behavioral addictions.

As a preferred training provider, Birches becomes part of a small group of private clinical healthcare companies approved by the IGCCB to provide trainings and assist in the organization’s mission of ensuring that therapists administering treatment for Gambling Disorder and related behavioral health problems are properly equipped with knowledge of the latest research and best practices for problem gambling and gaming care.

What is IGCCB training?

IGCCB has set up approved training programs to allow professionals to identify and participate in appropriate training courses that meet the IGCCB standard. Approved status is a mark of quality that the body awards to training programs that meet standards for training content and delivery.

Similar to the treatment options offered by Birches Health, many of the IGCCB training courses are 100% virtual.

As an example, International Certified Gambling Counselor-I (ICGC-I) Certification consists of a minimum of 30 hours of IGCCB-approved gambling specific training or education, completed with appropriate supporting documentation as defined by the IGCCB. A Bachelor’s degree or equivalent (as assessed by the IGCCB) in a behavioral health field (e.g., license or certificate in psychology, chemical dependency, counseling, social work, peer counseling, etc.) is required to meet the behavioral education requirement for certification.

Why is IGCCB training important?

Standardized training – specifically in the treatment of disordered gambling and gaming – is critical to ensuring that clinicians administering care are qualified and competent, elevating the standards of best-in-class treatment for individuals in need.

The IGCCB has adopted organizational goals to aid in the certification of gambling counselors:

  • To assure that this certification and registry process is available to all interested applicants.

  • To establish and endorse a professional code of ethics.

  • To maintain coordination and liaison with state officials, professional associations and educational institutions to keep current developments in the field of gambling treatment, and to annually review, modify, update and improve current standards of competence, skills and knowledge.

  • To establish a central registry of certified gambling counselors and maintain all necessary records of applicants.

Certification and registry of gambling counselors internationally is a voluntary process conceived by professionals in both the treatment field and the professional community to endorse an independent body to conduct the certification and registration process. It’s also worth noting that the IGCCB is composed of members who represent geographic, cultural, professional and recovery diversity.

Birches Health is proud to now offer training through its best-in-class clinical leadership team, helping increase the quality and reliability of treatment providers across the country.
